Rambling along Hellbrunner Allee

The Hellbrunner Allee links Salzburg with the palace of Hellbrunn.

Starting from the Nonntal district, the Hellbrunner Allee connects the Residenz and the old town of Salzburg with Hellbrunn Castle in the South over a distance of about 5 kilometres. Prince Archbishop Markus Sittikus ordered the construction of the straight alley to get comfortably to the castle and gardens built by Santino Solari in 1613.

wikipedia, GFDLToday, most of the Hellbrunner Allee remains open and the mighty chestnut trees prove that there was little change since the 17th century. Many locals walk their dogs in this area, and a number of villas show that this is one of Salzburg′s most expensive areas. Here you will find some smaller castles, including the Schloss Freisaal and the Frohnburg Castle, which served as the back of the Trappvilla for the movie "The Sound of Music". Just keep walking southwards and you will without doubt recognise the characteristic yellow building.

You will also see the Faculty of Sciences of Salzburg University, after the Hohensalzburg Fortress the second-biggest building of the city and built only in the late 1980ies. It takes about one hour to get to Hellbrunn Palace, but you can walk until Herrnau and jump on a bus to Hellbrunn or back to the city centre.
