Complete list of the Prince Archbishops of Salzburg

Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, the father of Salzburg's Baroque glory.

All through history since the 7th century, Salzburg was shaped and influenced by its mighty Prince Archbishops ("Fürsterzbischöfe"). Their power was - at least during the prime of Salzburg - unique in the Holy Roman Empire. For example, the Archbishop of Salzburg had the privilege to select Bishops for the filial dioceses of Chiemsee, Gurk, Seckau and Lavant themselves and without involvement of the Pope.

They were entitled to anathemise their enemies themselves and - bearing the honorary title of "Legatus natus" - the Archbishops of Salzburg wear the Cardinal′s purple if in Rome. The "Salzburger Domkapitel" (something like a board of directors of the Diocese of Salzburg) has the privilege of electing the new Archbishop of Salzburg from a suggestion of three that the Pope presents. The latter two privileges are valid until today.

To put it in a nutshell: The Archbishops of Salzburg were - and partly still are - big. Since they are undividable connected with the history of Salzburg, a list of them with the years of their reign can serve as a neat guideline to follow Salzburg through the centuries. Each one of the following Archbishops has left an imprint on the city and the province, and looking for their traces in Salzburg can be good fun.
