Salzburg in November

Salzburg in November

Salzburg is nice all around the year - yet every month has its specific attractions. In these "Salzburg around the year" articles, we try to highlight the most important reasons to come to Salzburg in this specific month. November can be somewhat miserable - but attracts with the openings of the skiing season and Christmas markets.

Weather in Salzburg in November

Fog, rain and the first snowfalls: That′s what you usually expect from November in Austria, and Salzburg is no exception. The end of the month usually sees the opening events of the skiing season, but this applies only to the ski resorts of the mountainous South. In the city of Salzburg, permanent snow is unlikely, but you will probably see snow-white mountain tops if you look to the south.

The average daily maximum temperature is at eight degrees Celsius, the minimum reaches zero. For those from warmer climates: This means that you should expect frost. Three hours of sunshine on the average November day won′t warm you up, especially with 10 days of rain or snowfall. Bring warm clothing, cover your head and take care to wear warm socks and proper shoes. On the bright side: Christmas markets open in late November.

The 1st of November is "All Saints′ Day", which is highly regarded in Austria. Many people go to the graves of their dead friends and relatives, decorate them, light a candle or pray. In Salzburg, the Kommunalfriedhof is the biggest cemetery, dating back to the 19th century. More central cemeteries are much older - the most famous ones are St. Peter′s and Sebastiansfriedhof. Expect congestions on All Saints′ Day.

On the 11th of November, St. Martin′s Day is often celebrated - mostly a bid deal for children, who make little lanterns that they light with a candle and form a procession that goes to church. Many restaurants serve goose around St. Martin′s Day, the traditional meal for the occasion, usually with red cabbage, a bread dumpling and cranberry sauce.
